When the person you love still causes you to feel wonder, you are still alive to his or her mystery. Wonder is the child of mystery. It calls your heart to thanks and praise.
"Дај ми нешто што никада неће умрети" затражила је својевремено једна девојчица од чувеног француског фотографа Едвара Бубеа. На њену молбу он је годинама одговарао својим чудесним фотографијама. Управо због тога што знамо и осећамо, макар то било и "само" интуитивно, колико је живот крхак и несигуран, чезнемо за нечим што неће бити пољуљано и обесмишљено. Живећи на земљи, имамо утисак да смо на чврстом тлу. Међутим, најдубље основе Земље не почивају ни на чему; Земља лебди у ваздуху одржавана силама теже. To have true integrity, poise, and courage is to be attuned to the silent and invisible nature within you. Real maturity is the integrity of inhabiting that "immortal longing" that always calls you to new horizons. Your true longing is to belong to the eternal that echoes continually in everything that happens to you. Real power has nothing to do with force, control, status, or money. Real power is the persistent courage to be at ease with the unsolved and the unfinished. To be able to recognize, in the scattered graffiti of your desires, the signature of the eternal. True prayer in the Holy Spirit keeps the graciousness and splendour of that vulnerability open.
Хришћанско предање углавном прави разлику између два типа молитве: оне која изводи из света - далеко од светске пометње и забаве и утврђује човека у постојаном стајању пред лицем Божијим, и оне која се огледа кроз активно и ангажовано присуство: ora et labora. О'Доноху примећује како смо често склони подвајању ова два типа молитвеног настројења, што не би требало да буде случај. Насупрот подвајању, он подстиче на њихово обједињавање. Подвајање нуди лажне алтернативе, док обједињавање молитвом прожима васцело човеково постојање:
Everybody should attempt both these forms of prayer, particularly the form they find uncongenial. Exclude nothing. Maybe it would also be possible to bring them together if we speak of the prayer of being. At its deepest level, creation is continuously at prayer. The most vital and creative prayer is always happening within us, even though we never fully hear it.

Prayer issues from an eternal well within you. The presence that prays within you is your soul. It is interesting to read in the New Testament that the soul is always seen as a continuation of the Holy Spirit. No place does it ever say that we should pray to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not different from the activity of your prayer. You pray in the Holy Spirit. The little preposition suggests how you are suffused with the Holy Spirit. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and the deepest longing in you is spirit.
Молитва је, према томе, увек мистично ступање у тајну живота, или како је Махатма Ганди имао обичај да каже: "Живот је тајна која се мора проживети, пре него проблем који се мора разрешити". У том смислу молитва нас учи сагледавању живота из свих могућих углова; ономе што су у сликарству покушавали Кадински и Пикасо, растварајући и приказујући предмете које су сликали из најразличитијих перспектива.
Mystical prayer is never trapped. Most of our viewpoints are trapped like magnets to the same point on the surface. Mystical prayer teaches us a rhythm of seeing that is dynamic and free and full of hospitality. Far bellow and beyond the fear of limitation of the ego, mystical prayer teaches us to see with the wild eye of the soul. It sees the secret multiplicity of presences that are active at the edge of our normal field of vision.

Предање познаје многобројне молитве које расветљавају и обликују биће онога који им прибегава. Молитва човека доводи у непосредни додир са његовим властитим срцем. Једном када се са њим човек сусретне штета је не ослушнути га и не допустити му да нам само изговори властиту молитву. Постоји нешто изванредно лепо у изговарању молитве која потиче из самог срца онога који је говори. Како доћи до тога да душа проговори, Џон О'Доноху даје следећи савет:
Give yourself time to make a prayer that will become the prayer of your soul. Listen to the voices of longing in your soul. Listen to your hungers. Give attention to the unexpected that lives around the rim of your life. Listen to your memory and to the inrush of your future, to the voices of those near you and those you have lost. Out of all of that attention to your soul, make a prayer that is big enough for your wild soul, yet tender enough for your shy and awkward vulnerability; that has enough healing to gain the ointment of divine forgiveness for your wounds; enough truth and vigour to challenge your blindness and complacency; enough graciousness and vision to mirror your immortal beauty. Write a prayer that is worthy of the destiny to which you have been called. This is not about any kind of self-absorbed narcissism. It is about honouring the call of your soul and the call of eternity in you. Take as much time as you need to find the shape of the prayer that is appropriate to your essence. It might take a month or a year. When you have it shaped, memorize it. When you have it learnt by heart, you will always carry this gracious prayer around the world with you. Gradually, it will grow into a mantra companion. It will be the call of your essence, opening you up to new areas of birth; it will bring the wild and tender light of your heart to every object, place, and person that you will meet.
